I went to an oral surgeon who is sending me for an x-ray. It seems that what he has in mind may empty my bank account. Are there any home remedies that can loosen my jaw? Also, will it get worse if left untreated- or can it possibly get better? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Your jaw is locked because the muscle is in spasm- and the body has locked it down to prevent it being further irritated. Try applying heat to the jawline and sipping the warmest fluids you can. When you get some in the mouth, turn your head so it will pool in the cheek pocket- to warm matters from the inside as well. That should let things relax enough to let you take as much as 800 mg of Ibuprofen- which has antiinflammatory/spasmodic properties that can give you some relief. A permanent fix depends on what it triggering the TMJ to begin with, or at least eliminating something like impacted molars, or even a misaligned bite. The simplest fix is for those who grind their teeth at night, and overstress the jaw muscles. That’s just a bite guard, which is made to fit you personally by any dentist. It won’t require an oral surgeon. If the heat and ibuprofen(motrin) won’t give you enough relief, a regular dentist may be able to inject a local anestheic into the spot to give you temporary relief and let you open the mouth better. It’s not a good idea to just leave it go- as the jaw in a clamped position will give you headaches and the spasms can actually crack molars or other teeth. So go see a regular dentist, at least to find out what lies behind the problem, and possibly figure out what the real problem is. Jaw clamping is just a symptom- not the disease.
