Ok, my husband has had severe pain for over a year now on the right side of his face. It isn’t 24/7 pain but it varies. We thought it was a toothache or something because sometimes the orajel seems to work. Finally talked him into going to the dentist. he had two cavities on that side and we had them filled this morning. Its hours later, the novacaine has worn off and it is the same pain coming back. Ok, so we don’t have insurance like so many others, and so going to see a dr. and having a bunch of tests done would be brutal. I’ve looked online to find TMJ dysfunctions (which is a possibility) but I couldn’t find what they actually need to do to cure people or give them relief. He won’t take pain pills other than ibuprofen. So… any ideas? Help! I feel so bad that he is in so much pain so much of the time.

first, does his jaw click/pop when he opens it? or does the muscle right in front of his ear seem really tight?
if so, it could be TMJ, if not, then I have no idea
for TMJ relief, there’s not much you can do
anti-inflammatory meds
try taking a warm wash cloth and just having in rest on his jaw and the side of his face that hurts, keep it warm (you’ll probably need to replace it every few minutes with a new one)
see if that helps relieve it.
I had pain in my head and jaw like that once. It made my teeth hurt too. It turned out to be a deep sinus infection. Since it was deep in the sinus cavity it didn’t drip or make me feel stuffy.
Maybe that’s the problem. They can give you an antibiotic, and if it clears up, then you know it was an infection! Sometimes they want to take an X-ray to confirm… but you can refuse any test you feel is too expensive.
