I have just recently been diagnosed with TMJ. No nausea or light headedness, just some cracking, popping and occasional pain. My doctor mentioned that it may be caused by night time teeth grinding (which i have been told by my dentist that i do) and i might want to look into getting a night guard mouthpiece. But when i opened the box, it said it was not recommended with people who have TMJ. But doesnt explain why. I want to stop the nighttime grinding, but i dont want to make my TMJ worse.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
(He just prescribed me an NSAID (Naproxen), some muscle exercises and recommened i use ice packs which i have been)

Hi
I have TMJ and I grind my teeth during the night. I recently went for a tooth abscess and the dentist recommended that I get a night guard. They took my impressions and I received one for my upper teeth and it fits fine. (except that the last wisdom tooth was left out in the guard impression). I have been having it on in the night for around 2 weeks now and have been noticiing that it is causing me to bite the insides of my cheek on both sides. I now have a line of pinched flesh on the insides of my cheek.. Is this normal?

She took my measurements etc and I collected the night guard yesterday but she only gave me the one for the upper jaw. Is that ok? I was under the impression there will be one each for the upper and lower jaw. Also since my teeth in the lower jaw are most affected shouldnt I be getting something for the lower jaw??

I am currently on 7.5 hydrocodone and 10mg valium for the pain and it still barely masks the pain.

There are a variety of reasons for jaw pain. It’s important to find the real source of the problem. Then you can go about finding the proper care to improve the situation.
