Does health insurance cover night guards?

Friday, March 19th, 2010

I clench my teeth at night and I have TMJ (lockjaw) pretty bad. Because of the lockjaw I can’t get a night guard made at the dentist office. I have to go to a TMJ specialist at the hospital and have them make a night guard.

Does anyone know if this is covered by medical insurance?

TMJ and Mouth Guards?

Monday, March 8th, 2010

I have just recently been diagnosed with TMJ. No nausea or light headedness, just some cracking, popping and occasional pain. My doctor mentioned that it may be caused by night time teeth grinding (which i have been told by my dentist that i do) and i might want to look into getting a night guard mouthpiece. But when i opened the box, it said it was not recommended with people who have TMJ. But doesnt explain why. I want to stop the nighttime grinding, but i dont want to make my TMJ worse.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
(He just prescribed me an NSAID (Naproxen), some muscle exercises and recommened i use ice packs which i have been)

What's a good mouthguard to use to help me stop grinding my teeth at night and help my TMJ?

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

I have a bad case of TMJ and need a night guard for my mouth. I’ve been told I grind my teeth at night. I purchased a mouth guard from rite aid a year or two ago and it hasn’t helped. it was only 30.00 and it’s one of those ones you boil and it would move around in my mouth and wake me up it never helped. so whats a good mouthguard to use at night time that i can buy? I need something that will fit my teeth without moving, and something that isn’t like OVERLY expensive and will last a good bit to help with my grinding and TMJ?

Night guard for the upper jaw?

Friday, February 19th, 2010

My dentist told me that I needed a night guard as I have TMJ and I grind my teeth in the night. She took my measurements etc and I collected the night guard yesterday but she only gave me the one for the upper jaw. Is that ok? I was under the impression there will be one each for the upper and lower jaw. Also since my teeth in the lower jaw are most affected shouldnt I be getting something for the lower jaw??
