TMJ symptoms are at first indicated when opening and closing of the mouth becomes difficult; in fact, if TMJ pain is not treated immediately then it may lead to severe problems. Grinding or crunching sound occurs when one opens and closes the mouth, if a TMJ problem is present.

There are several causes of TMJ. Any activities which cause strain in the jaw can lead to TMJ. Headaches and pain in the ears are some of the problems related to TMJ.

The Role of Chiropractic

When suffering from pain, people think allopathic treatment will provide quick relief. And so, many often ask whether a chiropractor can fix TMJ and relieve them from the pain, both quickly and permanently. A chiropractor will definitely help a patient to get relief from the intense pain or discomfort. A chiropractor is not only interested in treating the patient just for a particular period of time; in fact he will help you to get rid of the disease forever.

A chiropractor will carry out a detailed study of the problem and after properly understanding the cause of the problem will start the treatment. Chiropractic is concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of the disorders which are of mechanical nature and the effect it has on the nervous system and the health of the person. Today chiropractic is gaining popularity.

Chiropractic is a holistic approach to health challenges of a physical nature. Chiropractors focus on exercise, nutrition and the lifestyle of the patient. Furthermore, chiropractic recognizes that the human body, the environment and the lifestyle which is being practiced are inter-related and must be addressed for complete healing.

People often wonder how a chiropractor can fix TMJ. In fact in many of the cases it has been observed that the chiropractic treatment has been found to be more effective than the allopathic treatment. A chiropractor will recommend certain muscle relieving TMJ exercises which will relax your jaw muscles and will provide relaxation. Meditation, massage and biofeedback, including nutrition, are some of the other methodologies adopted by the chiropractor to treat the patient.

If the question, “Can a chiropractor fix TMJ?” has been bothering you then give up your hesitation and contact a qualified chiropractor. He will definitely fix your TMJ and will ensure that the problem never repeats in future. His therapies and his counseling will be of great help.

It is possible to strengthen just about every single part of our bodies in some way or another. This is even true for our jaws. Yes, it is possible to do TMJ exercises and strengthen your temporomandibular joint. The TMJ is the joint that is in charge of how your jaw moves. It controls the opening and closing of your mouth and the movement of your lower jaw from side to side. It’s a cartilage covered ball and socket joint. The joint also has a disk in it whose job is mainly to prevent wear and tear from taking their toll on your jaw. While your jaw gets plenty of exercise when you eat, there might be other times when you want to do other kinds of exercises that will improve the health of your jaw.

Most people can go their entire lives without experiencing severe problems with their temporomandibular joints. Of course between five and fifteen percent of the population do experience some kind of problem with their TMJs and experience some kind of pain. Making sure to exercise your TMJ can help you prevent as well as overcome many of the issues that accompany TMJ disorders. Just make sure to do them properly or you could injure your jaw further.

A similar comparison can be made to sore elbows and ankles. If your elbows and ankles are sore, do you need to exercise those parts of your body all the time to heal them if they are injured? Of course not. Typically you apply ice and heat to the affected area of your body and then, once it starts to feel better, you might exercise it to strengthen the muscles that surround it. This is the same thing that you need to do with your temporomandibular joints. While there are facial yoga exercises that you can do to strengthen your jaw, if you over do it then in the long run you could end up doing more harm than good.

If you have been experiencing signs and symptoms of a TMJ disorder you need to figure out what is causing the problem before you try any strengthening exercises or begin any treatments. Sometimes they are caused by the shifting of your teeth (this can’t be cured by facial exercises). Sometimes the disorders are caused by stress in your daily life. Before you try to treat the problems in your jaw joint, you need to figure out what is causing your jaw to move incorrectly or to lock. Seek out the help of your doctor and dentist to figure out what is causing your disorder. Exercising your TMJ could only exacerbate the problem if you try to do the exercise before figuring out the cause of the problem.

Of course, there are plenty of reasons that you should exercise your temporomandibular joints on a regular basis. Exercise will strengthen the joint and the stronger your jaw, the easier time it will have standing up to the wear and tear of TMJ disorders. Just make sure to proceed with caution if you start to experience pain.

TMJ can be incredibly painful and add stress to the upper body causing headaches, severe jaw pain and much more. This leads to a lack of sleep and can be really frustrating to a sufferer. In this article I’ll share my top 3 TMJ exercises that have helped me along the way.

1. Stand in front of a mirror and slowly open and close your mouth. Many TMJ sufferers will notice that your jaw will open on one side first, as if it were opening crooked. This is a major cause of TMJ. Practices slowly opening and closing your mouth, but focus on making it open evenly. Doing this will pump blood up into the jaw muscles and relieve some pain. Do this 10 times, 3 times per day. Over time this will also help to “cure” your TMJ.

2. Left and right movement. Stand in front of your mirror and make a fist. Place the fist on the left side of your jaw. Push your jaw to the side until you feel it pull. Hold for 4 seconds and repeat 4 times, 3 times per day. Do the same for the right side of the jaw. This will stretch out those tense muscles and you’ll begin to regain movement.

3. The Dixie cup. While this isn’t exactly a TMJ exercise, this is more of a pain relief technique. Get a Dixie cup and fill it with water ¼ of the way full. Place in freezer. Once frozen place the bottom of the Dixie cup on your TMJ joint and move in a circular movement. This will numb the joint relieving some pain, while working and massaging the sore joint muscles at the same time.

I hope you find some relief with the TMJ exercises above. As a sufferer myself I’ve used these and they each work great. I’ve got many more TMJ exercises that I’ll be sharing with you in the near future

Do you ever lay awake in bed at night because of your TMJ pain? I remember just wanting my wife to shoot me because nothing I did would stop the constant pain. It even hurts to chew food! Luckily, I found a few things that relieve the pain, and can actually reverse the damage to the TMJ joint.

Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ) is very painful – even debilitating – and many TMJ patients are willing to go to any extreme to treat this disorder. Unfortunately for many patients, despite their willingness to do “whatever it takes,” they frequently fail to get the results they’re looking for. Ironically, the simple solutions are sometimes the most effective, and there are ways to self-treat TMJ that are frequently more effective than surgery.
The temporomandibular joint – found on each side of the face – is one of the most complicated joints in the entire body. Its range of motion includes side to side, backward and forward, as well as opening and closing. There are so many muscles and movements associated with the temporomandibular joint that is perhaps not surprising that there are millions of people with TMJ problems.
Common TMJ symptoms include painful headaches, muscle tension, jaw clicking and popping and even jaw locking. Neck and shoulder pain, dizziness, ear pain, tinnitus, and pain in the cheeks, temples, sinuses and eyes are other frequent symptoms of TMJ.
Barring any physical injury, stress is often the primary cause of TMJ. The pain is due to the tension and muscle tightness that occurs around the joint. Interestingly, even though your pain may be centered around the temporomandibular joint, tense muscles in other areas of your body may be pulling and tugging on muscles attached to the TMJ, actually causing the TMJ problem. Naturally, it is important to find the true source of the tension and relieve that source in order to improve the TMJ pain.
TMJ treatment options can include massage and other relaxation techniques to relieve stress on muscles. Muscle relaxants, night guards worn in the mouth, and heat and ice packs are some of the treatment options commonly recommended by doctors and dentists.
However of all of these TMJ treatment choices, the one that seems to have fastest and best lasting results are TMJ exercises – which involve exercising the muscles in question. These series of short three-minute exercises can produce results far more dramatic than any medication or surgery can offer.
So, what steps can you take to make it easier to manage and treat temporomandibular joint disorder? Keep a journal of any TMJ symptom that you may encounter. For instance, when you first feel headache or dizziness, make a note in a journal. Or when you experience jaw clicking or neck or shoulder pain, make a note of it. Then on a regular basis keep track of any changes in these symptoms.
Once a TMJ treatment – be it exercises, massage or medication – has been prescribed for you, keep another journal in which you describe the results. Have the symptoms improved? Are they worse? How long does it take for the symptoms to clear up? Does the pain return as frequently? How long can you go between headaches or neck pain?
If you are taking prescription medication for your TMJ pain, keep a record of what you take and when. Is it helping the symptoms? Are there any side effects? Keep track of when side effects occur and how severe they are. Having this information handy will help your doctor prescribe the treatment that best addresses your overall health.
Setting up journals like the ones described here is easy to do. You can use a paper worksheet, a computer word processing program, or even a spreadsheet program like Excel.
You owe it to yourself to take an active role in managing your own health. TMJ is incredibly painful, but there are ways to treat the tension that causes the problem and eliminate the symptoms. You need to use every tool at your disposal to make sure you get the best results possible.

Author: submit111@gmail.com

The TMJ condition can be very inconvenient and painful. Furthermore, for TMJ sufferers the pain may not just involve the jaw area. A TMJ patient may also suffer from a TMJ headache.

Experiencing TMJ Pain

The jaw is not the only area affected by TMJ. TMJ patients can suffer from facial pain and, as a result, get facial inflammation, too. On top of that, one could also possibly experience ear pain and ringing. One other TMJ related condition is the TMJ headache.

In severe cases, a TMJ headache may be felt throughout the head area. In a lot of cases though, the pain may only be felt in the temple region. A TMJ headache is actually referred pain or pain that originates from the jaws and radiates to the temple area. This type of headache is considered a tension type of headache and may further radiate to the neck, shoulders and back regions.

The TMJ Headache

TMJ-related headache, however, should be the least of your concerns. Since the pain may increase and last for days up to a couple of months. This can naturally lead to poor sleep and fatigue. All these could therefore translate to poor work performance and interpersonal interactions. Your head ache may not disappear on its own so you may need prompt treatment to get you back on track.

Factors Affecting Your Headache

As previously mentioned, TMJ headache may complicate into other health conditions. Several factors including emotional dilemmas, menstrual cycle and physical fatigue may lead to more TMJ headache pain. Some experts say that a headache of this sort may also occur with sinus and nose congestions or problems.

Misdiagnosis

It is not surprising to get a misdiagnosis for a TMJ-related headache especially if your general practitioner is not thoroughly familiar with TMJ problems or if you go to a doctor who specializes in something else. Sometimes, TMJ can be mistaken for migraine or sinus problems especially if the patient does exhibit sinus symptoms along with a TMJ headache.

TMJ Treatment

Doctors can have different approaches to treating the TMJ condition. Some doctors may simply prescribe a pain reliever or over the counter anti inflammatory drug to help ease the pain of a TMJ linked headache. What you should remember though is that a TMJ headache is caused by your TMJ condition. It therefore follows that you can treat your headache best by addressing your TMJ problem.

Like any health condition, TMJ can be treated and approached from various angles. You could however try to manage your TMJ condition yourself. There is a possibility that your condition may be stress related. If this is the case, what you need to do is to look for ways to relax. You could enroll in formal meditation or yoga classes or you could simply look for activities that you find relaxing. You also need to mentally take note of situations when you suddenly feel yourself go tense and will yourself to relax.

TMJ Treatment | TMJ Symptom : Cure TMJ the Natural Way

Firstly, let’s define what TMJ really means? TMJ is the commonly used acronym for temporomandibular joint disorder. The pain associated with TMJ is thought to be caused by displacement of the cartilage where the lower jaw connects to the skull causing pressure and stretching of the associated sensory nerves. TMJ is pain resulting from the wear and tear caused by overuse of the temporomandibular joint. Stress, tension and anxiety often contribute to overuse, as each of these conditions can cause people to grind their teeth or clench their jaws excessively.

Many TMJ patients are unaware of the cause of their condition. A number have TMJ symptoms that do not interfere with their lives. And the symptoms can be both nerve racking and painful such as:

* Patients with TMJ often grind their teeth (bruxism) to find a comfortable bite.
* Deviation of the lower jaw to one side on opening. This is called mandibular opening deviation.
* Continual jaw muscle spasm can cause muscle shortening with limited opening. Looking at the side of a person’s face, you can often make out the lower jaw.The bottom of the lower jaw is usually parallel to the floor. However, many TMD patients have a sharp downward angle. This TMJ symptom is call a steep mandibular plane angle.
* When the corners of the mouth get red, swollen and painful. It’s called angular chelitis and is also seen when denture patients have worn out dentures.
* It is not unusual to see swelling of a TMJ patient’s face. This TMJ symptom is called facial edema. Some sufferers have unusual movements of their necks (cervical torticollis) and lower jaws. (mandibular torticollis).
* TMJ sufferers often have pain in one or both of the jaw joints and TMJ pain is common. The jaw joints may have clicking and popping noises. These are called TMJ noises.

Until now even doctors don’t really know how to cure TMJ permanently. All they do is prescribed strong pain killer for temporary relief. All these medicines fail. Even if they reduce the pain a little for a while in the beginning, they’ll stop working little by little as your body gets immune to them.

TMJ Treatment Exercises

The purpose of the TMJ exercises is to prevent clicking of the jaw and to strengthen muscles which pull your jaw backwards. It will relax the muscle which pull the jaw forwards or to one side as you open your mouth, and this will take the strain off your joints.

Set aside two 5 minute periods every day, at a time when you are relaxed and have nothing on your mind. One good time is just before you go to bed, another is perhaps when you get home from work. Sit upright in a chair and carry out the following manoeuvres:

1. Close your mouth on your back teeth, resting the tip of your tongue on your palate, just behind the upper front teeth.

2. Run the tip of your tongue backwards on to the soft palate as far back as it will go, keeping the teeth in contact.

3. Force the tongue back to maintain contact with your soft palate and slowly open your mouth until you feel your tongue just being pulled away from the soft palate. Do not try to open your mouth further. Keep it in this position for five seconds and then close your mouth. Relax for five seconds.

4. Repeat this manoeuvre slowly over the next five minutes in a firm, but relaxed, fashion.
Thousands of people have already used these exercises to permanently cure their TMJ. Considering how complex this condition is, it’s amazing how well they work for many people.

Another proven TMJ Exercise

1. A deviation is an unwanted shifting of the jaw to one side. When many TMJ patients open their mouths, their jaws deviate to one side. Almost always the jaw shifts towards the jaw joint that is damaged. Over time the good side of the mouth becomes overused and develops problems. This TMJ exercise is used to help reeducate the jaw to open correctly. It must be done in front of a mirror so that you can actually see your jaw open and close.

2. Try and open your mouth straight. This will take some effort because the weak muscles on the bad side will not want to function correctly when you ask them. Open and close correctly for ten openings and take a rest. Repeat another ten openings again and take a rest. Finally repeat ten more. This is called three sets of ten. Do three sets of ten three or four times each day.

3. Stretching can be done by slowly opening your mouth as wide and you comfortably can and then slowly closing. Then slowly opening to the left side as wide as you comfortably can and then slowly closing. Then slowly opening to the right side as wide as you comfortably can and then slowly closing. Repeat these movements until your muscles feel better. You can do this stretching exercise while driving, watching TV, before bed, at work, and during a lot of other times.

4. The next step is to assist your jaw in doing these stretches by using your hand to gently go a bit further than just by opening your mouth yourself. Do not use a lot of force! Do each of the stretching movements as previously described above but use your hand to open a little bit more than you could only with your mouth. If this causes a lot of pain, don’t do it.

5. You can increase the blood flow to your muscles by placing moist hot towels on the sides of your face while you do this exercise. Run a sink with hot water until it fills up about half way. Adjust the hot water so that you can touch it with your hands and it doesn’t burn. Place two hand towels in the hot water and then wring the two towels out. Quickly fold the towels up neatly and place one on each side of your face. Do your stretching exercise until the towels become cold. You can continue to reheat the towels and repeat the exercise until your muscles feel better.

There are also methods that worked for other people but not proven that could for others. Well it’s worth of a try for people that’s just starting to suffer TMJ symptoms. It may lead to your TMJ treatment or some other ways will work for you.

* Changing your diet, especially to get more magnesium
* Using a fanny pack instead of a purse
* Using extra sharp knives in the kitchen
* Seeing a physical therapist who specialized in ergonomics and posture
* Doing yoga postures and ergonomic stretches every day
* Using a back roller
* Trigger point therapy and moist heat
* Reading and studying the books listed above on yoga, repetitive stress injuries and body alignment
