how long have you had the pain?
most TMJ pain goes away on its own. if you are chewing gum alot or grinding or clenching your teeth, cut back on that if you can and wait it out. talking alot can also put more stress on your jaw, so cut back on that if you can and see how it works.
for pain, you can also take Excedrin in the morning (morning because of the caffeine rush) which should help for a few hours atleast. you can also take ibuprofen (Aleve, Advil, generic) in generous doses up to 600mg, which is close to a usual prescription dosage.
I have a locking/popping jaw, and I find that ice, followed by stretching of the muscles, followed by a heat compress works well. The main thing is to try and relax the muscles that are locking up or causing you pain. You can try massaging the area as well. The very worst case would be surgery, if something is out of place and cannot be fixed by manipulation.
Try to avoid extreme movements in your neck, back and jaw (like yawning, chewing, turning your neck quickly, etc.) And try to keep yourself as aligned as possible (good posture, don’t grind your teeth.) Other than that, I suggest you get this checked out by a different doctor if your current one isn’t working for you.
I feel your pain and discomfort. I too suffer from TMJ. I recently bought a mouth guard. It’s a piece of rubbery plastic that sits between your teeth while you sleep. It stops you from clenching your jaw and grinding your teeth. I have noticed that has helped my jaw, neck and shoulder pain a whole lot! You can purchase one at a drug store in the toothbrush isle. I also made my own heating pad/thing. I got a long sock and filled it with regular white rice. I placed it in the microwave for 2 minutes. I put it on my shoulders and let it hit my jaw. It feels sooo good and helps my muscles relax. I hope you feel better soon.
Surgery to repair the problem. Go see a bone doctor. You can also talk to a chiropractor. They may be able to help you without surgery.
I have frequent neck and back pain. Alcohol always does the trick. Just don’t drive.
